<<Please find attached a schematic for the SWR Bridge and Trip Unit that I use on my remote 160m transmitter. A few points you should know if you want to build it:-

a) The number of turns on the toroid depend on the transmitter power - the higher the power the more turns. I use 20 turns for 1kW. The core material doesn't matter too much provided it is a fairly high permeability.

b) D1 and D2 are Schottky diodes. I used those as the SWR bridge also displays on a meter so I needed good linearity at low SWR ratios. For a trip unit only they could be replaced by a silicon diode such as a 1N4148.

c) If you already have an SWR bridge you can just tap into the forward and reference outputs.

d) I used an LM358 op-amp, but you can substitute that - but the amp must be capable of working down to 0V input voltage. The TL072 would be another suitable amp.

e) My transmitter has a 28V rail for most things so I used a 24V relay for the trip. You could just as well use 12V. I went through some contortions - I had to cut the 28V down to 24V to avoid over running the LM358 and as I didn't have a 7824 on hand I had to use extra circuitry to use a 7815....

f) The circuit as shown will trip on a 3:1 SWR ratio. If you want to change that then change the relative values of R8 and R9. R8 + R9 should be the same value as R10.

g) I haven't shown the trip relay but you can make it trip whatever you feel is appropriate. In my case it trips the amplifier HT and prevents PTT. I need to press a reset button to set it going again.

Hope that helps and look forward to working you on 160m.>>

''''i would like to ask you:
my amplifier has a maximum r.f output at 500w. I have not a scematic from my swr/power Bridge.

1) Can i use your schematic without using the swr Bridge? i would like to remove the bridge.
i want to connect it only at tests.
2) about the number of turns on the toroid. I have many ferrite beads FB-43-7351 and FB-43-7352 (43 material from https://www.amidoncorp.com/items/44 ).
can i use it? how many turns i must use for 500w maximum power.(the maximum power is 500w
but many times i operate the amplifier at 200-250w). Or i must use another ferrite?
3) C1,C2,C3,C4,C5,C6 are feed throught capacitors?
4) Can i replace transistor TR1 RS340 with another transistor like BC series (like bc546) or BD series (like bd139)? (i have many of them)
5) if i want 2:1 swr ratio what values must have the R8,R9,R10 resistors?
6) about variable capacitor C7 (=7p) it must be an air plates capacitor? (how many volts?)
or i can use a small variable capacitor? (something like this http://media.digikey.com/photos/Murata%20Photos/TZ03P450F169B00.jpg)
7) in which frequency do you operate your transmitter? it should make some changes at components values
to be the circuit suitable to 160m band frequencies?
8) the connection between R.F input and R.F output is a transmition line or a common wire?
the toroid where it is placed in regard to this transmition line or a common wire?
Can you post a photo from your circuit?""

<<Hi again.

I think that 500W/1kW you would not need any changes.

If you can use your existing SWR bridge it would save some work. You can do that if your bridge has separate circuits for forward and reverse - some of them use one diode/resistor/capacitor circuit and switch the meter.

1) You must have an SWR bridge to use the trip unit - either my circuit or another.

2) I think your FB-43-7352 would do the job fine. I would suggest you stick with the 20 turns on the toroid - any thin insulated wire will do.

3) Yes, those are feed through capacitors, but not really necessary at 160m - just use disc ceramics - anything over 1n will be fine.

4) The BD139 will be excellent.

5) Make R8 and R9 47k each and R10 100k.

6) That Murata capacitor is a bit lightweight - it will have several hundred volts of RF across it. I use some small surplus ptfe insulated ones that I obtained years ago. If you can't get an hv capacitor the alternative is to use a fixed (say) 4p7 capacitor for C7 and a variable (say) 100p capacitor for C10. But C7 must still be several hundred volts working - preferably 500V to give a margin of safety.

7) I only use my transmitter on 160m - there is no other band!

8) Rin to Rout is just a wire which passes through the centre of the toroid. It should be well insulated and as short as possible - although at 160m it will not matter if is is 100mm long.

I don't have a photo of my unit and the remote station is 15km away. I will take a camera next time I go and see if I can get a shot. It is a little difficult as I am recovering from a long stay in hospital and find anything requiring physical effort very hard.

Good luck - I will be happy to answer any questions.>>

"""1) I would like to ask you about C7=7p variable capacitor.
i would like to tell me how i will adjust it. i mean what i must look at when i adjust the capacitor.
maybe the swr in bridge or something else?
2) And after this, how i can check the circuit that it works well? (i don't want to check this by burning my output mosfets :) )
3) The circuit must be connected between amplifier and bridge or between bridge and antenna? if after the test i will remove the bridge?
4) you said <<1) You must have an SWR bridge to use the trip unit - either my circuit or another.>>. Why the bridge is necessary? i can't use this unit without a bridge. i would like to remove the bridge after the tests.
5) if i use 1N4148 diodes it will works well? or stocky diodes are better??

6) if i want to operate the ampifier at 100-200w, it is necessary to do some changes at components values? or i can use the same circuit without any changes. what do you think?"""

1) You adjust C7 for minimum indicated reflected power when working into a 50 Ohm dummy load. (You can use a well matched antenna instead of a dummy load but it is not as good as (a) it causes interference to others and (b) even the best antenna is only perfectly matched at one frequency.

2) I see your point! I didn't have that problem as I am using an under-run tube in my final so a fraction of a second working into a bad SWR was not important. All I can suggest is to set R8 to say 4k7 for trial purposes. The circuit should then trip on a pretty good SWR. You can do this using DC also. With a perfect SWR the forward voltage should be something positive (a volt or two depending on transmitter power and toroid), and the reflected voltage should be zero. With the 2:1 SWR the reflected voltage should be half the forward voltage. That's why R8 and R9 are equal values so that the forward voltage is halved and the comparator IC2B trips at that point.

One thing I forgot to mention before. If you are using 24V fine, but if you are using 12V the value of R6 must be changed to 470k. All that IC2A does is to provide a bias roughly equal to the turn on voltage of TR1.

3) If you have another SWR bridge (as I think you do) the unit can be connected in either position. The important thing is that it must be between amplifier and antenna.

4) Sorry I didn't make myself clear. This unit contains its own SWR bridge as it relies on measuring forward and reflected power to operate. You do not need another bridge in circuit.

5) The 1N4148 should be fine for the bridge diodes. The only thing is that the unit will be less accurate at low transmitter powers.

6) The circuit should still work OK at 100W. Measure the DC forward voltage out of the bridge (at C1). If it is more than a volt fine. If not reduce the number of turns on L1 until it is a volt.

7) I used one of the small moulded inductors. I don't know how easy they would be for you to obtain but they are very cheap here. You could use a toroid but you would need ~100 turns on your cores. Air core is a bad idea.

hi. and thank you very much! see my following comments please.
1) You adjust C7 for minimum indicated reflected power when working into a 50 Ohm dummy load. (You can use a well matched antenna instead of a dummy load but it is not as good as (a) it causes interference to others and (b) even the best antenna is only perfectly matched at one frequency.

When i use a 50ohm dummy load my bridge shows 0mw RFL power. So, how i will adjust C7? i will construct your schematic, but i can't measure the RFL power with it. Can i measure another value with a multimeter, something like a voltage when i adjust C7? If i don't use variable capacitor but a constant capacitor?

2) I see your point! I didn't have that problem as I am using an under-run tube in my final so a fraction of a second working into a bad SWR was not important. All I can suggest is to set R8 to say 4k7 for trial purposes. The circuit should then trip on a pretty good SWR. You can do this using DC also. i don't understand this.in (http://this.in/) another mail you said to set R8 47K (and R9) for SWR 2:1. Now do you say to set it 4,7k? i have been comfused. Sorry if i bore you, but if you can explain it again. thank you.

i am thinking to use 24volt to avoid problems.https://mail.google.com/mail/e/330

4) Sorry I didn't make myself clear. This unit contains its own SWR bridge as it relies on measuring forward and reflected power to operate. You do not need another bridge in circuit.

but i can't measure the forward and reflected power with this unit (because it has not meters). only to cut off the voltage under bad swr. I would like to use this unit only to cut off the voltage under bad swr.
[ the RD, GN and the broken blue line in your circuit means something important?]

5) The 1N4148 should be fine for the bridge diodes. The only thing is that the unit will be less accurate at low transmitter powers.

Did you use something like this? http://www.positiveoffset.com/Parts/1uH-inductor.jpg (but 100uH). I can find these inductors but they are for low voltages.
i am using this calculator http://www.dl5swb.de/html/mini_ring_core_calculator.htm
to calculate the number of turns that needs a ferrite toroid to create an inductance. For 100uH a 43 material ferrite core FT50-43 needs 16 turns.
